The "Coming of Age" theme has a twofold meaning. LMM is marking its 20th anniversary by becoming a financially self-reliant, separately-incorporated ministry of the ELCA.

The theme also refers to a spirituality project LMM undertook to understand what churches can do to engage young men between the ages of 18 and 34. As part of the project, 88 young men from across the United States participated in extensive interviews. Sixteen of those interviewed organized the LMM Young Men's Ministry Council. The results of the project were presented in the book, "Coming of Age: Exploring the Identity and Spirituality of Younger Men." The gathering's purpose is to bring men of all ages into a deeper relationship with God and assist younger and older men in building intergenerational relationships.

"We will serve, we will play, we will learn, we will worship, we will encounter God — and each other – and we will grow" said Doug Haugen, Director, Lutheran Men in Mission, ELCA offices.

The gathering will be preceded by the 2008 LMM Assembly July 31- Aug. 1. The organization's triennial business session will elect a president to succeed Heber Rast, Cameron, S.C., and other officers and board members. Rast will complete his second three-year term. The assembly will adopt a budget for LMM and celebrate the organization becoming an incorporated, self-funded ministry of the ELCA with a full-time staff.

deFreese Statement on ELCA Draft Social Statement on Human Sexuality

March 2008
Statement from
The Rev. Dr. David L. deFreese,
Bishop Nebraska Synod, ELCA
concerning
ELCA First Draft of
“Social Statement on Human Sexuality”

The Rev. Dr. David L. deFreese
Bishop
Nebraska Synod
I am thankful for a church that addresses the crucial issues of life … even when they are so deeply complex and controversial. Human sexuality is a matter deserving our most thoughtful and prayerful reflection because of its powerful impact upon our life together.

This first draft of an ELCA “Social Statement on Human Sexuality” is well rooted in Biblical scripture and human reason, and I believe, appropriately focuses upon two essential understandings: relationships and responsibility. Our relationship with God is primary in this discussion, as well as recognizing God’s great design of life within community. This writing deals honestly and forthrightly with the reality of our human brokenness and selfishness. This is what we Lutherans
call sin. It lifts up the human gift of responsibility in living out our lives, confronting where we fail and applauding where we flourish. Trustworthy relationships are at the heart of how we live.

This draft re-affirms that marriage is the location for full sexual expression, and testifies to the wonderful power of fidelity. It speaks to gender in friendships and confronts the risks of cohabitation. It also calls for continued prayer, study, and conversation as this church deals with same gender relationships. It wisely calls for greater protection of our children in an increasingly sexualized society, while denouncing the dangers of sexual exploitation.

This draft is not a finished product. Rather it calls for robust conversation and deliberation, hearings for people to share their understandings (of which Nebraska Synod will have two in September) and rewrites. The final draft will be voted upon at the August 2009 Churchwide Assembly.

ELCA Releases Draft Social Statement

March 13, 2008 08-0313 – lejg

Omaha (ELCA Nebraska Synod) – The Evangelical Lutheran Church in AmericaTask Force for ELCA Studies on Sexuality has prepared a draft of the social statement for feedback and response. This draft was made available Thursday, March 13 at noon Central Daylight Time on the ELCA website at:
http://www.elca.org/faithfuljourney

In 2001, the 2001 ELCA Churchwide Assembly voting members requested that the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America develop a social statement on human sexuality. The 2009 ELCA Churchwide Assembly in Minneapolis will discuss and make a determination about the social statement.

The draft of the proposed social statement was sent to all clergy and other professional leaders of the ELCA. The draft is subject to change.

Following an extensive review and comment period, the draft will be revised by the task force. Between March and November, a series of hearings on the draft document will be held across the church. Members of the ELCA Task Force will participate in the hearings and gather feedback on the draft until November 1.

Two hearings will be conducted this fall in Nebraska Synod
September 22 in Kearney.
September 23 in Lincoln.

A proposed social statement on human sexuality is due in early 2009. The final proposed statement will be given to the ELCA Church Council with a request to place the document on the agenda of the 2009 ELCA Churchwide Assembly for action. The 2009 ELCA Churchwide Assembly is scheduled for August 17-23, 2009 in Minneapolis. Nebraska Synod, ELCA will have 25 members in a voting delegation to the 2009 Churchwide Assembly.
